Research Topic: Link Between Hearing and Balance Dysfunction, Frailty, and Cognitive Decline in Older Adults
Research Project: Recent research has highlighted a connection between age-related hearing loss (ARHL) and dementia, although the causative mechanisms remain unclear. Hypotheses suggest that ARHL may reduce cognitive reserves, induce structural changes in the brain, or lead to social isolation, all of which contribute to cognitive decline. Balance dysfunction is often comorbid with ARHL and is also linked to cognitive impairment. It may cause changes to medial temporal brain regions and increase social isolation. Hearing and balance dysfunction are frequently associated with frailty, which itself is connected to cognitive decline. My project aims to investigate how hearing and balance function, frailty, and cognitive function interact to influence dementia risk in older adults. This research is significant given Canada's aging population and ARHL's status as a leading modifiable dementia risk factor. Findings could inform preventive strategies and healthcare practices.
