Research Topic: Cognitive and Mental Health in Adults with Occupational Noise Exposure

Research Project: This research aims to investigate how long-term occupational noise exposure affects cognitive function and mental health. Traditional assessments rely on self-reports, which may overlook early signs of cognitive decline. To address this, we will use a virtual reality (VR) system, which objectively tracks biomarkers such as pupil dilation and heart rate to measure cognitive capacity (mental effort) and physiological stress. The study will compare workers at the Port of Halifax with long-term occupational noise exposure to a control group without such exposure. Participants will complete self-report questionnaires and undergo physiological assessments during cognitive tasks. This study aims to improve workplace health monitoring by identifying early cognitive and mental health risks in noise-exposed workers, contributing to better prevention and intervention strategies.
