Welcome to the Cognition, Aging, and Neuroscience Lab (CANLab)

Dementia is a growing public health concern, with its global prevalence projected to rise substantially in the coming decades. In Canada, the aging population is expanding rapidly, with the 85+ age group expected to triple by 2050. This demographic shift is anticipated to contribute to a significant increase in individuals living with dementia. The Alzheimer’s Society of Canada (2024) projects a notable rise in the number of Canadians affected by dementia in the coming decades. Concurrently, immigration is reshaping Canada’s demographic landscape, resulting in a more ethnically and linguistically diverse older population. These changes highlight the urgent need for culturally sensitive strategies to enable the early identification and intervention of cognitive decline.

At CANLab, our primary research focuses include:

  • Markers of Subjective Cognitive Decline (SCD)

  • Dementia modifiable risk factors

  • Developing culturally inclusive detection tools

  • Creating accessible solutions to promote healthy aging

In addition to our core research themes, CANLab contributes to cutting-edge work in:

  • Auditory, speech, and language neuroscience

  • Big data analysis

  • AI and machine learning applications in health and neuroscience research

As an interdisciplinary lab, we:

  • Collaborate: Partner with researchers across disciplines to drive innovation and advance knowledge.

  • Engage: Partner with communities and stakeholders to drive meaningful impact.

  • Mentor: Support trainees and fellows to excel in inclusive, impactful research.

Join us in shaping the future of healthy aging!
